Jason Robira is a percussionist, multi-instrumentalist and producer born and raised in Lafayette, LA and currently based in New York. The son of a songwriter and session musician, Robira grew up attuned to the Acadian-inflected music indigenous to his native region: Cajun social and folk music, swamp-pop and rhythm & blues. For a decade, he toured and recorded with experimental rock and noise acts based in Lafayette and Athens, Georgia. Since moving to New York in 2010, he has been an active fixture in Brooklyn’s experimental and new-jazz scenes: drumming in Arthur Doyle’s NYCbased ensemble The New Quiet Screamers and the spiritual-psych band NYMPH, mixing and engineering the ambitious Golden Shafts of Light recording project, and performing with improvisational groups Sun Watchers and Aux Bells. Robira also studies Javanese Gamelan with the esteemed Kusama Laras, housed at the Indonesian Consulate, and has performed with them at Lincoln Center and the Asia Society.
